Sacramento International Airport Security & Screening

Security at Sacramento Airport is handled through a coordinated effort between multiple agencies and organizations. This includes the Sacramento County Department of Airports, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department – Airport Division, and trusted private security companies. Federal agencies also play a key role, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) & the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

All passengers must complete screening before boarding their flights. TSA security checkpoints open daily at 4:00 a.m. Travelers are encouraged to review TSA guidelines in advance to move through the checkpoint smoothly. You can visit the TSA website to ensure you are fully prepared before arriving at the airport.

Don’t forget to check the current TSA wait times at Sacramento International Airport on travel day so you can plan accordingly.

SMF has priority lanes at both terminals’ security checkpoints for preferred customers. To know more customers must refer to their respective airlines.

Airlines provide wheelchair service for passengers with disabilities, from curbside to the aircraft. This service is free, but you should contact your particular airline at least 72 hours before your flight to reserve it.

For ADA curbside help, you can contact the following numbers:

  • Domestic airlines: 916-877-3339
  • Aeromexico & Volaris: 916-877-2000

ATMs

Need to grab some cash before your flight? You’ll find four Bank of America ATMs near the airport for convenient access. A $3 transaction fee applies to non-Bank of America customers.

Internet

Stay connected while you wait. You will find free wi-fi across both terminals, so you can easily browse, stream, or catch up on emails. Internet kiosks are also available for quick access on the go. Here are the locations where customers may spot the free wi-fi services:

  • Both the airport terminals
  • Concourses
  • Rental car facility
  • Sacramento Jet Center
  • Free Waiting Area

Wi-Fi is not available in the garage, and other parking lots. FlySacramento is the network’s official name.

Restrooms

You will easily find restrooms at the SMF Airport. If you notice an issue in a restroom, the airport makes it easy to report it. Your feedback helps keep facilities clean and comfortable for everyone.

Baggage Carts

Traveling with heavy bags? Smarte Carte luggage carts are available for $5 each to make things easier. You can find them in the parking garage, near terminal entrances, and in baggage claim areas. They accept both cash and cards.

Text Feedback Service

Have a comment or suggestion? You can send feedback through the airport’s text service. Standard message and data rates may apply. For help, simply text HELP to 55744.

Elevators

Elevators are available at both terminals to help you get around the airport. You can check the SMF Terminal A and Terminal B maps for exact locations and follow the directions.

Service Animal Relief Areas

Traveling with a service animal? Sacramento International Airport has relief spots both before and after security in each terminal. They even have bags on hand to make clean-up easy.

Terminal A:

  • Before security: Outside, to the right of the building at the curbside pick-up/drop-off.
  • After security: East side, just past TSA, near Gate A1, next to the restroom.

Terminal B:

  • Before security: Outside, right side at the curbside pick-up/drop-off.
  • After security: East side, just past TSA, near Gate B11 by the restroom.

TDD Phones

Telecommunication devices for the deaf (TDD) are also available throughout the terminals. You will find them in the lobbies and concourses, so anyone who needs them can stay connected easily.

Amadeus Facial Biometrics

Sacramento Airport has introduced Amadeus Facial Biometrics at some of its boarding gates for international flights. It is a secure technology to match a traveler’s live photo with their passport or visa image stored in U.S. Department of Homeland Security systems. This helps speed up the boarding process while adding an extra layer of security and providing a smoother, touchless departure experience.

Participation is voluntary for U.S. citizens, and anyone who prefers not to use facial recognition can simply inform an airline representative or U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at the gate.

Accessibility

Sacramento International Airport works to make travel easy for everyone. Both terminals are designed to be accessible in accordance with ADA guidelines.

You will find TDD phones, braille signs, and visual paging throughout the terminals, as well as gender-neutral restrooms in all areas.

If you need any special accommodations, you can contact your airline for flight-related help or reach the airport directly through the Airport Communications Center at 916-929-5411.

Wheelchair Assistance

Wheelchair assistance is available free of charge from airlines and curbside skycaps. To ensure a smooth process, you must inform your airline in advance, either when buying your ticket online, through a reservation center, or at a travel agent.

If you need a wheelchair from the curb to the aircraft, call 916-874-0126 a day or two before your flight to arrange for an attendant. You can also ask at your airline’s ticket counter:

  • Terminal A: Counters on the ground level
  • Terminal B: On the second level

Additionally, if you are bringing a battery-powered wheelchair, contact your airline in advance to make arrangements.

Lactation Rooms

You will find rooms for nursing mothers in the post-security area in both terminals, close to the gates, near the female restrooms.

Aira – Visual Assistance On Demand

Aira is a live service designed for people who are blind or have low vision. It connects users with a trained professional who provides real-time visual assistance while they’re at the airport.

Using a smartphone and the Aira app, a live agent can view the device’s camera and assist by describing surroundings, reading signs, or guiding travelers through the terminal.
